Collect Behavior Data on the Go with Apps

Data-Based Decision-Making
Yes, we all know that we’re supposed to collect data on our student’s academic and behavioral performance, but it’s hard. “Too bad” say Mr.ChuckChuck, it makes a difference in student achievement and that is what we are here to do.

In the old days, we had to collect data with pen and paper in hand and then graph that data so that we could visually analyze the rate and trend of the students performance so that we could make data-based decisions about when to change instruction so that a student would meet their benchmarks. OK, many teachers out there rarely did that, but we should have been doing this regularly. However, with the introduction of apps or mobile applications that you can add to your smart phone, we now have less excuses for collecting data.

A long time publisher of electronic data collection software, eCove, just unveiled a new mobile app of their product. Their three new iPhone apps eCove Observation Software are available on the iTunes store for free. I just downloaded my copy today, I’ll let you know what I think after I take it into a classroom for a test run.

Data and Behavior
Tracking data is important for academic achievement. I think we do an OK job of this in most cases. But I’m very interested in collecting behavioral data and sharing this data with students so that they can begin to self-monitor. Once we make students aware that they can control their behavior, even students with disabilities will have a change to change their behavior. That’s good for them, their teacher, and the whole classroom. If mobile apps make it more convenient for students and teachers to collect behavior data, then we have a winner of an idea.

In the meantime, let me know what you think of using mobile data collection tools as opposed to pen and paper. Like it, hate it, curious? Leave me a comment.
